HOW DOES IT WORK?

Habitat homes are built with some volunteer labor and some donated goods. Homes are sold at no profit to low-income families who have a NEED for housing, the ABILITY TO PAY for the home, and are WILLING TO PARTNER with us by giving 350 hours of time working on their own home, other families’ homes, and in the Homestore. Homes are financed with 25 year zero interest mortgages.

Habitat’s “theology of the hammer” brings together people of different races, different church denominations, different political parties, and different opinions. They may not agree on anything else, but they can all agree on a hammer. Relationships are established and friendships formed and strengthened. People from all walks of life come together to “hammer” out a stronger community.

Edisto Habitat for Humanity’s work to build homes and eliminate poverty housing is simply a means to share the good news of God’s love. By offering hope and a hand up to people who are longing for a better life, we are following the command of Jesus to care for and reach out to our brothers and sisters in need. Our program offers a HAND UP, not a HAND OUT.

Each year our affiliate sends a donation to Habitat for Humanity International to assist in building homes in foreign countries as well.
